The Service
Where Geology Meets
Engineering Design
The geological framework of a site controls everything from foundation bearing capacity and excavatability to slope stability and groundwater behaviour. PGI Geotechnical Group's engineering geology services translate North Queensland's extraordinarily complex and varied geological record into clear, quantitative engineering parameters that your structural, civil and geotechnical design team can act on with confidence.
Our engineering geologists provide detailed geological mapping and rock exposure logging, rock mass characterisation using the internationally recognised RMR (Rock Mass Rating) and Q-system frameworks, discontinuity orientation and condition logging, and kinematic stability analysis for rock slopes and cuttings. Where required, we produce three-dimensional subsurface geological models that support foundation design in heterogeneous ground, tunnel and underground access design, quarry resource evaluation and mining geotechnical feasibility studies.
North Queensland encompasses some of Australia's most geologically significant and diverse terrains — from the Precambrian metamorphic and granite basement of the Mount Isa Inlier and the ancient Proterozoic sedimentary sequences of the Carpentaria Basin, through the Palaeozoic igneous and metamorphic complexes of the Townsville hinterland, to the Quaternary alluvial and estuarine deposits of the coastal lowlands. This geological complexity is an asset in our hands — PGI's decades of field work across the entire NQ region means your project benefits from a body of local geological knowledge that no newcomer to the region can replicate.

When You Need It
Engineering Geology for
Complex Ground
Foundations & Excavations in Rock
You're excavating into rock for a building basement, bridge abutment or retaining wall and need rock mass characterisation to assess excavatability, support requirements and bearing capacity before your contractor prices the work.
Mining Geotechnical Studies
Your resource project requires geological mapping, rock mass classification and geotechnical analysis to support open pit slope design, underground access assessment or tailings storage facility geotechnical characterisation.
Corridor Studies & Route Alignment
You're planning a road, pipeline, power line or rail corridor and need engineering geological mapping along the alignment to identify geological hazards, assess construction risks and inform design alternatives.
