What We Do

Our Services

Full-spectrum geotechnical and engineering geology services for construction, civil infrastructure and mining across North Queensland — from desk study to detailed investigation and construction-phase support.

Service 01

Geotechnical Investigation

Full service page →

A well-designed geotechnical investigation is the single most important investment you can make before breaking ground. PGI Geotechnical Group plans and executes comprehensive subsurface investigation programs across North Queensland, providing the critical ground data that structural engineers, civil designers and project managers depend on to make sound decisions.

Our investigations follow a staged approach — beginning with a thorough review of existing geological mapping and available borehole data before designing a field program precisely calibrated to your project's scale and risk profile. We manage the entire process from borehole drilling and test pit excavation through to laboratory testing, data interpretation and geotechnical report preparation.

Whether you are designing foundations for a high-rise in Townsville, a bridge abutment in Charters Towers or a remote mine site in Mount Isa — our investigations give you the confidence to design efficiently and construct safely.

Key Deliverables

  • Borehole drilling supervision & logging
  • Test pit excavation & classification
  • SPT (Standard Penetration Test) programs
  • Undisturbed sampling for laboratory testing
  • Groundwater monitoring & level recording
  • Subsurface geological modelling
  • Foundation design parameters
  • Geotechnical investigation reports
Service 02

Soil & Field Testing

Full service page →

Accurate soil characterisation is the foundation of every geotechnical assessment. PGI Geotechnical Group conducts a comprehensive range of in-situ field tests and laboratory analyses to precisely quantify the strength, compressibility, plasticity and permeability characteristics of soils encountered on your site.

Our field testing capability includes Standard Penetration Testing (SPT), Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing, vane shear testing for soft cohesive soils, falling-head and constant-head permeability testing, and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing for pavement and earthworks projects. All field work is conducted by qualified technicians supervised by experienced engineers.

Laboratory testing is carried out through NATA-accredited facilities, with results interpreted by our engineers to produce actionable geotechnical parameters in accordance with the relevant Australian Standards.

Key Tests Performed

  • Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
  • Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP)
  • Atterberg limits (LL, PL, PI)
  • Particle size distribution
  • Moisture content & density
  • Unconfined compressive strength
  • California Bearing Ratio (CBR)
  • Permeability & consolidation testing
Service 03

Slope Stability & Landslide Hazard Risk Assessment

Full service page →

North Queensland's terrain — from the steep Wet Tropics ranges to the dissected inland tablelands — presents significant slope instability challenges. PGI Geotechnical Group provides rigorous slope stability assessments that quantify hazard risk and define practical engineering solutions.

Our assessments integrate field mapping of slope geometry, drainage patterns and distress features with subsurface investigation to characterise failure-controlling materials. We then perform limit equilibrium stability analyses to determine factors of safety under static, seismic and rainfall-induced groundwater conditions.

We provide landslide hazard and risk assessments for development applications, infrastructure corridor studies and post-event investigations — delivering reports that satisfy council planning requirements, state government guidelines and Australian Geomechanics Society standards.

Key Deliverables

  • Slope mapping & hazard identification
  • Limit equilibrium stability analysis
  • Rainfall-triggered failure assessment
  • Seismic stability evaluation
  • Remediation design options
  • Landslide hazard & risk rating
  • Planning authority compliance reports
  • Monitoring recommendations

Site Classification (AS 2870)

Full service page →

Site classification is a regulatory requirement for all new residential construction in Australia. PGI Geotechnical Group is North Queensland's preferred provider of AS 2870-compliant site classification reports, accepted by all Queensland building certifiers and delivered with the rigour and turnaround that residential developers and builders demand.

We assess site conditions through soil profile investigation, soil reactivity testing and Atterberg limits analysis to assign the appropriate site class — from stable Class A through to reactive Class P sites requiring special engineering design. Our reports clearly communicate site conditions, the basis of classification and appropriate footing system options.

Operating across Townsville, Ayr, Bowen, Ingham and beyond, we offer competitive turnaround times that keep your building approvals on schedule.

Key Deliverables

  • AS 2870 site classification report
  • Soil profile description & logs
  • Shrink/swell index (Iss) testing
  • Atterberg limits testing
  • Reactive soil depth determination
  • Footing system recommendations
  • Certifier-ready documentation
  • Rapid turnaround programs available

Engineering Geology

Full service page →

The geological framework of a site controls everything from foundation performance to excavatability. PGI Geotechnical Group's engineering geology services translate North Queensland's complex geological record into clear, quantitative engineering parameters that your design team can act on with confidence.

Our engineering geologists provide detailed geological mapping, rock mass characterisation using the RMR and Q-system frameworks, discontinuity logging and kinematic stability analysis for rock slopes and cuttings. We produce three-dimensional subsurface geological models supporting foundation design, tunnel alignment, quarry resource evaluation and mining geotechnical studies.

From the Precambrian basement of the Mount Isa Inlier to the Quaternary coastal deposits of the Townsville Plain, our local geological knowledge is an invaluable project asset.

Key Deliverables

  • Engineering geological mapping
  • Rock mass classification (RMR, Q)
  • Discontinuity logging & analysis
  • Subsurface geological models
  • Rock slope kinematic analysis
  • Excavatability assessment
  • Geological hazard identification
  • Mining geotechnical studies
