PGI Geotechnical Group mobilises across 500,000+ km² of diverse geological terrain — from the tropical coast to the remote outback. Wherever your project is, we have the local knowledge to deliver.
Our Regions
10 Service Regions. One Trusted Partner.
Each of our service regions has distinct geological characteristics that demand local expertise. Our team has worked across all of them — and that experience shows in every investigation program we design.
Headquarters · Primary Hub
Townsville
Our headquarters and the geotechnical epicentre of NQ. The region's geology ranges from soft reactive estuarine clays on the coastal plain to weathered granite and metamorphic basement rocks of the adjacent ranges. PGI has completed hundreds of investigations here — residential site classifications, commercial foundation investigations, slope stability assessments and major infrastructure projects.
Burdekin Region
Ayr & the Burdekin
The Burdekin delta presents some of Queensland's most geotechnically challenging soils — highly reactive black clays with extreme shrink-swell behaviour that devastates residential slabs and infrastructure if not properly characterised. PGI has extensive experience with Burdekin reactive soils, providing AS 2870 classifications, reactive soil assessments and foundation design guidance.
Whitsunday Region
Bowen & Whitsunday
Bowen's coastal geology — weathered rock headlands, estuarine sediments and coastal sand deposits — requires careful geotechnical assessment for any development. PGI provides geotechnical investigation, site classification and earthworks services across the Bowen and Whitsunday region, supporting residential development, port infrastructure and major industrial projects.
Hinchinbrook Region
Ingham & Hinchinbrook
The Hinchinbrook region's high-rainfall landscape is underlain by complex geotechnical conditions — deep alluvial profiles, saturated coastal clays and steep mountain terrain subject to rainfall-triggered landsliding. PGI brings specialist slope stability and ground investigation expertise to the Ingham area, supporting local government infrastructure, residential development and agricultural projects.
Cassowary Coast Region
Cardwell & Cassowary Coast
The Cassowary Coast sits at the interface of ancient wet tropics ranges and a narrow coastal plain — creating geotechnical conditions characterised by variable, often shallow rock profiles interspersed with deep pockets of soft marine and alluvial sediment. PGI provides foundation investigation, site classification and slope stability services for residential, tourism and infrastructure projects in the area.
Northern Highlands
Charters Towers & Northern Highlands
The Charters Towers region occupies the transitional geological zone between the ancient basement rocks of the Townsville hinterland and the sedimentary sequences of the inland basins. Granitic and metamorphic bedrock — often relatively shallow — creates both sound bearing capacity and excavation challenges. PGI's engineering geology expertise is particularly valuable in this region.
Flinders Region
Hughenden & the Flinders
The Flinders region's predominantly flat terrain belies the geotechnical complexity beneath — variable alluvial profiles, reactive clay soils, and limited access to specialist engineering services. PGI mobilises to Hughenden and the broader Flinders Shire to support local government infrastructure programs, water supply projects and private development.
North West Queensland
Mount Isa & North West QLD
Mount Isa sits at the geological heart of one of the world's great mining provinces — the ancient Precambrian Mount Isa Inlier. Strong, competent basement rocks with complex fault and joint systems, highly variable weathering profiles and shallow rock depths in many areas make this a technically demanding environment. PGI provides geotechnical investigation, engineering geology and ground investigation for mining infrastructure, residential and town projects.
Gulf Country
Burketown & Gulf Country
The Gulf Country's extensive black soil plains — highly reactive Vertosols — present severe foundation challenges that have caused significant distress to infrastructure built without adequate geotechnical assessment. PGI mobilises to the Gulf Country for local government infrastructure renewal, remote community housing and growing tourism and pastoral development projects.
Isaac Region
Moranbah & Isaac Region
Moranbah and the broader Isaac Region are defined by the Bowen Basin — one of Australia's premier metallurgical coal-producing regions with major infrastructure investment. The Basin's gently dipping sedimentary sequences require specialist geotechnical assessment for mining infrastructure, town development and the growing renewable energy sector. PGI provides geotechnical investigation and engineering geology across the Isaac Region.
Beyond Our Listed Regions
These regions represent our primary service areas, but PGI regularly works beyond these boundaries. If your project is anywhere in Queensland's north, contact us to discuss requirements and mobilisation options.
